Cologne Bonn Airport
2002 — 2004
Visual identity and
signage system
In 2002 I came to Paris to collaborate with the design studio Intégral Ruedi Baur et Associés. I worked on the winning pitch for the Cologne Bonn Airport. In the course of the project I was involved in overall planning and coordination, development of visual identity, giving art direction, designing the pictograms and developing the signage system.
The Cologne Bonn Airport is unique in that it lies midway between two large and established airports. Rather than attempt to compete with these larger airports on their own ground, Cologne Bonn aims to carve out its own unique space, and provide an atmosphere which the other two hubs cannot replicate. Simplicity and ease of use, nice prices, and the deliberate debunking of the ‘grey airport’ myth, all combining to turn the facility into a pleasant place for transportation. The visual identity set in place at Cologne Bonn Airport presents a recognizable and specific airport. It is more than just a surface signature – it is a visual echo of the airport’s own individuality.
